Eneco is accelerating data-driven operations with Power BI to achieve climate neutrality by 2035
How do you ensure that data is not only available but also actually helps employees make better decisions and contribute to strategic goals? Eneco wanted to professionalize reporting and dashboards within the organization, give employees more opportunities to work with data independently, and make progress toward its climate goals transparent.
Together with Macaw, Eneco built an organization-wide foundation for data-driven work. With a Power BI Competence Center, training sessions, clear guidelines, and user-friendly dashboards, data became more accessible to employees throughout the organization.
The Challenge: Moving from Fragmented Reporting to Data-Driven Work
Within Eneco, many different methods for reporting and developing dashboards had emerged. Teams used different systems, structures, and definitions, making it difficult to compare insights.
Eneco therefore wanted to develop a single, clear approach to reporting and dashboarding. Employees needed to be able to generate insights independently, without every report having to be developed centrally. At the same time, clear frameworks were needed for data quality, privacy, governance, and management, among other things.
In addition to professionalizing the Power BI environment, Eneco wanted to use data to engage employees more deeply in its climate ambitions. Progress on the climate plan needed to be not only available in comprehensive reports but also understandable and accessible to all employees.
The Approach: A Scalable Power BI Foundation
Macaw helped Eneco set up a Power BI Competence Center for reporting and dashboarding. This team guided and coordinated the transition to Power BI and supported the organization in developing a standardized approach.
The approach included, among other things:
- setting up and improving processes
- developing templates and best practices
- organizing hands-on Power BI training sessions
- supporting employees with self-service reporting
- establishing a community of experienced users and champions
- balancing business autonomy with centralized policies and governance
Power BI was then rolled out extensively across Eneco and replaced QlikView as the central solution for reports and dashboards.
A Climate Dashboard from the User’s Perspective
Building on this broader Power BI foundation, Eneco and Macaw also developed a dashboard that provides insight into the progress of the climate plan.
The dashboard needed to appeal to a large and diverse group of employees. That’s why the project didn’t start immediately with technical development, but with creative design sessions. UX and UI designers explored how the information could be presented as clearly, accessibly, and attractively as possible.
Following this design phase, the dashboard was technically developed in Microsoft Power BI. Employees can view current progress via the intranet, Power BI, and large screens in the office. This makes the status of the climate efforts easily accessible throughout the day.
The dashboard is therefore not only a reporting tool but also a communication tool that informs employees and engages them in Eneco’s sustainability goals.
“Starting with design sessions was a stroke of genius. The dashboard was truly built from the user’s perspective.”
Ferry Bouwman, Project Manager for Asset Innovation & Transformation at Eneco
The result: greater autonomy and engagement
The combination of technology, governance, training, and design has ensured that Power BI is widely used within Eneco.
Employees are increasingly able to develop reports and dashboards on their own. As a result, many requests no longer need to be handled entirely by the Competence Center. The team can increasingly focus on providing advice, addressing complex issues, and managing strategic programs.
The training sessions have produced approximately twenty Power BI champions and a larger group of experienced users. They share their knowledge with colleagues and help further increase adoption within the organization.
The climate dashboard also contributes to this development. Approximately 3,000 employees can easily see how Eneco is performing and what progress is being made. This translates complex data into clear insights that inform, engage, and connect employees to the organization’s ambitions.
Among other things, the collaboration provided Eneco with:
- a single organization-wide platform for reporting and dashboarding
- greater autonomy through self-service reporting
- an active community of Power BI users
- greater control over processes, templates, and governance
- accessible insights into the progress of the climate plan
- Greater employee engagement in data-driven work and sustainability
The most important result is that Power BI usage skyrocketed.

Data as the foundation for further development
The Power BI Competence Center has grown into an independent and increasingly strategic part of the organization. Building on this foundation, Eneco can add new data sources, KPIs, and dashboards and further increase the value of data within the organization.
This case study demonstrates that successful data-driven work isn’t just about technology. It is precisely the combination of a scalable data platform, clear agreements, knowledge development, and a strong user experience that ensures data truly becomes an integral part of daily work practices.
